"How do I love thee? Let me count the ways."
As many of you are aware, April is designated National Poetry Month.
A time to honor, recognize and celebrate the literary contributions of poets around the world.

National Poetry Month was originally established in 1996, by the Academy of American Poets, and is said to be one of the largest literary celebrations in the world. The mission is to increase exposure and appreciation of poetry, through events, activities, and awareness programs sponsored on local and national levels.
With this as our goal, I'd like to share a few selected works from some contemporary poets that I think you'll enjoy.

“Time is money.”---

When I began blogging back in 2009, I never thought it would become an important income stream that would greatly enhance my writing business.

Like most “serious” writers, I saw blogging simply as a means to an end.

It was an avenue to build a platform and interest potential publishers and agents for future projects. And everybody was doing it…

Fast forward, it’s 2016. And my blog for writers has paid off big in exchange for over 500 posts, endless hours of creativity, and “pounding the virtual pavement” to get noticed.

And yours can too.

Today we’ll explore what you need to know to break through your “blog fog” and earn money for your investment.

But, before you begin implementing these money-making strategies, your blog must meet certain criteria for optimal success.

These are the conditions:
1. Your site must be “professional” in content and design, with a specific niche and a clearly identifiable target audience.

2. It must provide social proof. “Success breeds success.” This can be demonstrated through testimonials from satisfied clients, the number of followers you have, or icons reflecting awards your blog has won or industry recognition.

3. It must show consistent updates and maintenance. This conveys a sense of commitment, and builds credibility and trust. One post a week minimally is a realistic goal.

4. It must provide good take-away value.

Money-making Strategies Think of it as the “ABC’s”.

Ad Placement:

There is a common misconception that in order to make money through ads, a blogger must have “super-star“ status, a massive following, or be willing to settle for a few bucks a month in ad clicks. Not true. Over the last few years, I have earned thousands of dollars, and have had well-known companies and authors such as: Good Earth Tea, Healing Hands Massage Clinic, Five Star Publications, and popular novelists to place ads for their books and services at my spot. If you’d like to experience something similar, you can either pitch individuals or organizations directly, or place a tab on your site that says “advertise here”. Be sure to have your current stats available, and be able to explain how placing an ad with you can help advertisers to reach their goals and their target market.

In other words: what’s in it for them?

Blogging Jobs:

Using my blog as an “online resume” has helped me to hook new clients for my “ghost writing,” marketing and other creative services. Through it, (and testimonials), I have been hired to set-up other writers’ blogs, provide creative consultations, and even contribute to e-book projects.

Contests and Competitions:

Most writers don’t see contests as a way of making money through their blogs. But it is. Money can be made both directly and indirectly. For example, a pivotal point in my blogging career came years ago when I placed as a Top 10 Finalist at Write to Done’s annual competition. Though I didn’t get a monetary gift, it gave me mad creative “props” with blogging peers, and my first paying advertiser. While a friend of mine actually won $500.00 with her blog, through a theme-based contest. It could happen to you! Want contest opportunities?

Let’s face it: without clients, our freelance businesses would be nothing more than a pleasurable pursuit--a pipe dream, even.
Their confidence, compensation and continuous support helps to enhance our bottom lines and our quality of life.

Which is why the holiday season affords us the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation, stay on their radar, and perhaps cultivate interest in future projects.

With this in mind, here are 3 creative ways to capitalize on the holidays!

1. Send a Card.

Not the electronic kind; the physical ones sent through the snail mail. Include your business card, a brief personal note, and your signature, for a nice touch. Each year, my insurance agent sends me one and it really provides a very classy impression.

2. Get a clue.

Puzzled as to what type of gift to send to convey a favorable impression? Electronic gift cards are the perfect solution. And there’s a bonus here: EGC allow the recipient to choose from an assortment of options, based upon his/her preferences, interests, and lifestyle. They come in various denominations, and can be transmitted almost instantaneously.

3. Offer a holiday discount on your most popular services or products.

Your client saves money; you earn income. It’s a “win/win” for everybody.

'Tis the season of giving. Show your generosity to those who have patronized your business and partnered with you throughout the year, with these creative suggestions.

May the holiday season be one of abundant blessings and "warm" memories to cherish!
Thanks for your readership and support of the Coffeehouse for Writers.
October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
A time devoted to addressing a social ill that plagues countless women--from all age groups, religions, educational backgrounds and walks of life. Though in lower numbers comparatively, men and children are victimized as well.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, every 9 seconds, a woman is assaulted or beaten in the U.S.

In an effort to empower and educate women worldwide, author Darlene Greene, has penned a powerful book that serves as both a memoir and self-help book, "Blood Relatives."

In fact it is when domestic violence hit home, (through multiple murders of family members), that she was inspired to write the book, and open the doors to Ina Mae Greene Foundation.

IMGF is a Not for profit that provides crisis management, resources and outreach services to battered women in need of shelter, food, job placement, and a helping hand to start a new life.

Greene hopes that her efforts will break the cycle of silence surrounding domestic violence.
Because,"domestic violence hurts everyone."

Her new novel, "Big Momma Didn't Tell me This Would Happen" is slated for publication in 2016.
In tribute of National Poetry Month, we're proud to present a fierce female, veteran cop, and Chicago native who has just "released" an exciting read on what it's like to be one of the city's "finest."

G.M. Oqlat has been penning pieces for decades, on a variety of timely topics and social themes; but most have been inspired by her work as a veteran law enforcement officer. She has performed in numerous venues, including libraries, bookstores and schools.
She is now retired from the force.
LIFE’S SPICES FROM SEASONED SISTAHS

This book's well-blended recipe of spicy stories, sweet memories, and tangy lessons learned, provides a cornucopia of soulful nourishment for young, as well as other “seasoned sistahs.” These wonderful writers drew me into their worlds as they graciously shared life-changing experiences in warm and welcoming cadences.

Each story shared lessons on one or more of these spices of life: faith, wisdom, compassion, forgiveness, teaching, humility, self-reliance, and love.

These life lessons, among many others, explain why I loved this anthology of heartwarming stories.

“Grandmother’s Garden,” by Jo Ann Yolanda Hernandez is a sweet coming-of-age story of security and bonding between a granddaughter and grandmother. This is a peaceful story with rich imagery and texture.

Jennifer Brown Banks’ “Three Cheers for Courage: No guts, No glory!” is a passionate and poignant story about the gratifying power of fulfilling one’s dream…about the personal rewards of being bold, adventurous and courageous. It shows how faith, tenacity, and a victorious spirit can triumph over physical defeat.

“Menopause: The Madness and Mystery,” by Sandy Kay is an honest, humorous and upbeat story about the mystiques and adventures of menopause.

It reveals how fully embracing this pivotal chapter in our life can give birth to “unbelievable strength,” a heightened sense of humor, unbridled courage, “unrelenting perseverance,” and most of all, “unconditional self-acceptance” and love.

The stories mentioned here represent the appetizers to a sumptuous feast of timeless treasures included in the book.

I was captivated and comforted by this great anthology of stories--a wonderful celebration of unity, bonding, and infinite sisterhood.

This book is a real page-turner, a tasty blend of spicy, spirited lessons--ready to be shared.

It is the perfect heart-felt gift for you, the young, or “seasoned sistahs” in your life!
Do You Have a Blog...?

If you are a writer, you should have a blog. In addition to being an online representation of you and your writing, people will get to know you better personally and professionally. You can use it to highlight your knowledge, skills and creativity.

Following are four more reasons all writers should have blogs.
<dir>
1. It Serves as Your Online Portfolio</dir>Post all of your published works on your site, and when people request samples of your work, send them link instead of attaching documents. Not only is this convenient, sending people to your site will give them a chance to view all of your works and consider you for freelance projects.
<dir>
2. It Boosts Your Credibility</dir>Any time you tell someone your profession, the first thing they’re going to do is look you up online; thus, a blog boosts your credibility. In addition to showcasing your work, a blog allows you to connect with your audience through images, audio and video in ways that print cannot.
<dir>
3. It Increases Your Creativity</dir>Engage in wordplay. Write in different voices. Try a new genre. Create characters. Develop different angles on topics. Brainstorm new topics. Add life to your stories with images, videos and audio or use them to tell your story. These are just a few ways blogs help increase your creativity.
<dir>
4. It Helps Develop a Consistent Schedule</dir>Do you need a consistent writing or blogging schedule? Having a blog can help. Pick a day and time that you can comfortably fit writing or blogging into your schedule with few interruptions, even if it’s only thirty minutes a week. The goal is to develop a habit to achieve your goals.

How About You? Are you a writer with a blog? Why did you start your blog?
The Writer’s Guide to Everyday Life in America From 1607-1783

By Dale Taylor

Review by Karen Lange

Every writer needs to do research, whether for an interview, blog post, article, novel, or other project. The keen writer’s eye is always on the lookout for good sources. One such example I found is The Writer’s Guide to Everyday Life in America. Part of the Writer’s Guide to Everyday Life series by Writer’s Digest Books, this handy reference is a treasure chest of information. The introduction offers an extensive timeline and tips on how to use the book. An overview of the period is found here as well, providing key information that complements the rest of the book.

The author covers the “everyday life” concept thoroughly. Need to know, for example, what a settler might eat for dinner in 1650? Turn to Chapter 5, where you’ll find what foods are available, a typical diet, cooking techniques, and more. Not sure what the aristocratic ladies and gentlemen wore? Chapter 7 answers that one, and also tells us what the working class and servants wore. Hair, cosmetics, and accessory information are included too, to provide the complete picture of what early settlers looked like. Other chapter topics include marriage and family, education, architecture, government, laws and politics, transportation, warfare and the military, and pretty much everything else you can think of.

Included are regional overviews for the Chesapeake, New England, Middle Colonies, and Deep South areas, listing facts about governors, population, and other pertinent items. Interesting pictures and charts are sprinkled throughout the book. A complete bibliography is available if further research is necessary. The Appendix includes recommended film references that accurately highlight Colonial life.

This book is a great resource for an historical project that I’m working on, and has additional value in generating ideas, such as for stories or articles for any age group. There is great potential here for those unique angles that writers look for. If you’re in need of an historical boost, this just might be the right fit!

FYI: Other titles in the Writer’s Digest Everyday Life series include Life in Civil War America, Everyday Life in the Middle Ages, Everyday Life in the Wild West, and other titles, US and world history included.

Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t have to have an ivy league education, or initials behind your name to be considered an “expert” at something.

Everybody has a strength, sometimes referred to as a niche.

A niche is simply a talent or skill that distinguishes you from the crowd, and serves as an area of specialization in terms of marketing.
It doesn’t have to necessarily be something for which you’ve been formally trained, though it can be.

According to noted author and motivational speaker, Deepak Chopra,

“You have a unique talent and a unique way of expressing it. There is something that you can do better than anyone else in the world.”

For example, Hope Clark, the creator of Funds for Writers, is synonymous with grants and financial resources for writers.

Oprah is famous for her “gift for gab,” while Martha Stewart has created a multi-million dollar empire as a domestic diva.

These serve as “niche” areas for these women.

How about you? What passion ignites your soul?
I don’t recall, but I do remember Grandma’s ability to stretch a dollar and still make good meals. Time with Grandma also included games – Scrabble, Canasta, and her all time favorite, Rack-o. Even my children now think of her when the Rack-o game comes out. Caroline’s caring and can-do attitude lives on. I often pause and wonder how she would handle a situation – sewing, gardening, family, or otherwise.

There isn’t enough money on the planet to pay her back for all she did for us. In addition to the sacrifices she made for my sisters and me, she was the best cheerleader a girl could ever have. As a slightly chubby preteen, she dried my tears in the dressing room at the clothing store, telling me “You just have broad shoulders like your father.” She’d make every effort to find something flattering and suitable for the occasion. And let's just say that my reputation for being brutally honest has bruised a few egos, and sometimes causes as much "static" as a load of fresh laundry straight out of the dryer.

In fact, in the past, I have declined the opportunity to critique other creatives' poems, books, products, ---------fill in the blank, to avoid potentially "sticky" situations.
But here, I admit that I was pleasantly surprised.
I wasn't quite sure as to the necessity of the book; thinking that a lot of it could probably be found on the Internet for free. Hello?
I consider poetry my first love. However, I have also written short stories and have had some success with this genre. Back in college, my story, Playground in My Mind was a finalist in the Heinemann Short Story competition. Later in the academic year when my dorm magazine held a writing contest which allowed for entry of previously published work, I entered my same story. To my delight, my story placed first, I earned an attractive monetary prize, and my story lived on in the magazine.

My second success occurred when I entered the Tallahassee Writers Association’s short story competition last year. My entry, Rashida’s Letter, tied for third place. It was eventually published in their anthology, The Seven Hills Review, and I also benefited from valuable feedback from one of the judges. This is after another publisher had previously passed on my story!

If you like writing short stories, but are a bit discouraged by your efforts so far, don’t lose hope. Below are a few tips I would like to share:

1. Look out for short story competitions. Funds for Writers is a great place for this. You may think your story is not good enough, but you will never know until you enter.

2. Don’t limit yourself to just contests in the United States. Think global. Another plus is that some contests have no entry fees.

3. Whether your stories win contests or not, you can still compile them in a short story collection, which is what I eventually hope to do. It is ideal if your stories follow a central theme or sub-themes, but they don’t have to. You can then query publishers who are interested in short stories.

4. Join a writing group and bond with writers who like the short story genre.

So, step out of your comfort zone and be bold. Enter a contest. Breathe new life into old stories by finding creative ways to re-use them.

Care to share your tips or experience with the short story?
The Funniest Thing You Haven't Heard

by: Bryan Cohen

After becoming a class clown to cope with my nerdy outsider status in high school, it made perfect sense to become a comedian when I went to college. While I participated in several shows and dozens of comedy practices in my first few years at the University of North Carolina, it wasn't until halfway through my third year I heard a convincing definition of what comedy actually is. According to the British writers Joseph Addison and Richard Steele and their publication The Spectator, wit/comedy is the combination of two key elements. The first is that the idea must be funny in any language. This is why an obscure reference to your favorite NBC comedy might be found less funny than seeing someone slip on a banana peel. The second part, however, is the one that intrigued me the most. The second requirement of comedy is that it must be a surprise.

Have you ever tried to explain a joke? How often does it actually work? One of the reasons you sacrifice so much in translation is that when the joke is told out of context, you lose the element of surprise. The TV show or performance you attempted to deconstruct spent careful time and energy setting up a situation. The comedy comes when the writer or performer subverts that situation.

Let's say you want to write something that's funny. Do you need to start with a wacky character or location, like a proctologist or an ice cream parlor on the moon? No. Do you need to make sure that your dialogue is crackling with puns and insults? Not at all. What about an elephant? Should there be an elephant? There could be, but a pachyderm is not necessary for comedy.

All you need is a pattern. Create a scene that all seems to make sense. And then throw in the surprise. For example, set a scene of a fancy dinner party taking place in a mansion with everybody sticking strictly to black tie dress code. Then throw an octogenarian in a sequins dress doing a keg stand in the back.

The best part about surprise in writing is that it extends far beyond comedy. The Tyler Durden identity twist in Fight Club. The girl with the little red dress in Schindler's List. Surprise is a key part in some of the best works of entertainment of all time.

When you're conveying drama, love, beauty or anything else in your writing, the joy for your reader is in the surprise. It's so easy to create characters or situations that play by the rules. It's the creation of something new, something surprising that really grabs a reader's attention.

A lot of writers make an effort to copy the "successful formula" of other writers. Here's the problem with that. Successful writers were likely triumphant because they created something that astounded and delighted readers. The most successful among them were able to entertain readers in any language. The biggest successes started as unique surprises. Therefore, if there's any kind of formula to writing success, it's to create something astonishing.

Try it out. You may just find yourself "laughing all the way to the bank."
